No hash of anything is zero bytes long, so the equality can never hold and the coins can never move. 28 October 2011. With hindsight the page is one printing of the costliest malformed script in the chain's history. Mt. Gox — then the dominant exchange — had shipped withdrawal code that built outputs like this one; the faulty batch runs to 23 outputs and 2,609.36304319 ₿ in all, none ever spent, and every one of them confirmed in this same chapter — read whole off the chain by the script's own hash, and gathered in the Ledger as The Mt. The community learned of it from user genjix's Bitcointalk thread of 29 October 2011 ("someone fucked up and lost a lot of money"), in which Mark Karpelès, the exchange's operator, admitted the error; the missing byte was traced publicly in Ken Shirriff's March 2014 analysis (righto.com), which this reading follows. The lesson outlived the exchange: an output script is checked by no one until someone tries to spend it, so a sender's bug becomes visible only when it is already unfixable. Two and a half years later Mt.
